Breaking down barriers into work and giving people a second chance

After over two and a half years of unemployment, Paul Swindells has found a new lease on life, thanks to the efforts of #BuildingCareers, #TheGrowthCompany, and a dedicated recruitment consultant.

Joanne Fisher, who works closely with The Growth Company to deliver social value, shared her heart-warming experience of meeting Paul on-site this week after finding him a job in Ormskirk.

Paul, who previously worked for Knowsley Council for 10 years as a Bin Worker, had struggled to find work after being unemployed for an extended period.

Determined to turn his life around, he worked hard to earn his Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card and received upskilling support from The Growth Company.

Despite his persistence, Joanne initially hesitated to place him in a construction role due to his lack of experience in the industry.

However, Paul’s perseverance paid off. He regularly contacted Joanne, as well as other members of the team, eager for an opportunity. When a suitable role finally became available, Joanne decided to take a chance on him.

Today, she’s glad she did. Paul has proven to be an exemplary worker, arriving on-site30 minutes early, staying late, and always ready to help his colleagues and site managers.

During her visit to the site, Joanne was met with a heartfelt hug from Paul, who expressed his gratitude. "Joanne, I cannot thank you enough for everything you have done for me," he said, visibly emotional. "I never want to be on the dole ever again. I am forever grateful you picked me for the job over everyone else."

Joanne said it’s moments like these are what make her job so fulfilling. "I am so glad I am in a position to give people a chance, whether they have been unemployed for a long time, are care leavers, or ex-offenders. It really makes my day."
