As the housing crisis continues to grip large parts of the country, the call to action has never been more urgent. While we will see more houses being built this year and over the next five years as a new government administration comes into force, homelessness is still a big problem.
Our construction and social housing recruitment consultants are regularly in the biggest cities in the North and from Leeds to Liverpool and Manchester to Middlesborough, we see homeless people on the streets and struggling to put a roof over their heads and food in their mouths.
Manchester and it’s Greater Manchester Metro Mayor, Andy Burnham, looks to make in roads to providing a solution to the problem, Liverpool is hot on the trail and Building Careers is doing its bit to tackle it.
Back in 2022, Mr Burnham launched the ‘A Bed Every Night’ initiative, which aims to provide emergency accommodation for all rough sleepers during the winter months. The program offers shelter, food, and support services to those in need, with the goal of ending rough sleeping in the city.
He’s also championed the ‘Housing First’ approach, which prioritises providing stable housing to homeless individuals without preconditions such as sobriety or employment. This approach recognises that stable housing is a fundamental first step in addressing other issues faced by homeless individuals.
It’s Liverpool’s turn tomorrow and Building Careers’ North West division is stepping up alongside dedicated individuals like Kayleigh Fox, Alicia Brown, Jack Kehoe and Richard Bancroft to make a tangible difference. Our team is proud to participate in Sleep Out with Nugent 2024, an event sponsored by our friends at Krol Corlett Construction, aimed at ending homelessness across the North West.
Liverpool City Council has been working on prevention strategies to stop individuals and families from becoming homeless in the first place. This includes providing support services to people at risk of homelessness, such as financial assistance, mediation services, and access to housing advice.
The city also provides emergency accommodation for rough sleepers and individuals facing immediate homelessness. This includes shelters, hostels, and temporary accommodation options, particularly during harsh weather conditions.
And, like in other cities, Liverpool has outreach teams that work directly with rough sleepers to connect them with support services and accommodation options.
Tomorrow, we get to walk the same path.
Taking place on Tuesday April 16th, 2024, at the iconic Merseyside Maritime Museum in the Albert Docks, Sleep Out with Nugent offers a unique opportunity to experience some of the hardships faced by those without shelter.
By giving up our beds for a single night, we stand in solidarity with the hundreds of individuals on the brink of homelessness, striving to raise crucial funds and awareness to support them.
The statistics are stark: Liverpool is grappling with a homelessness crisis, with a surge in rough sleeper numbers over the past year. Many find themselves trapped in temporary accommodation, with limited housing options available. It's a reality that demands action, and Building Careers is committed to being part of the solution.
Debbie King, Business Director at Building Careers, said: “Through Sleep Out with Nugent, we aim to not only raise funds but also to shine a spotlight on the underlying issues contributing to homelessness in our community. Together, we can tackle this crisis head-on and make a meaningful impact on the lives of vulnerable individuals.
“Participating in Sleep Out with Nugent is more than just a gesture for us. It's an opportunity to effect real change. Whether you're a member of our team, a supporter of Building Careers, or someone passionate about social justice, we are encouraging you to help tackle this vital cause. Your involvement can make a direct difference in the lives of those experiencing homelessness, providing hope, resources, and support when they need it most.”
